Hikari was the horse of Shinjo Isamu, a samurai. A mere snicker at his expense would flare Isamu's temper. During a training another student laughed because Isamu struggled to manage Hikari and his bow at the same time. The horse, feeling Isamu's anger, collided in purpose into the other horse, throwing the boy down, and trampled the boy’s hand. [1]

When Isamu's patrol was near Floating Rock Village, raiders eluded the Badger Clan on their way south. Isamu hid in the stables while his squad was slain. They occupied the village for a week, and Isamu was hiding without food, so he ate Hikaru to survive. The lone survivor of Floating Rock Village was ejected from the clan. [1]
