The Hida family was the ruling family of the Crab Clan. [1] They were large and strong, tough and enduring, with little patience for the weaknesses of others. Exceedingly pragmatic, with little time for the polite fictions of court, they were often bitter about the mocking condescension concerning their manners. [2]
Duty[]
The Hida family stood guard against the Shadowlands, their task an eternal vigil to keep the Empire safe from the forces of Jigoku that would despoil Rokugan for their dark master. [2] They were intractable warriors, garrisoning the Kaiu Wall. [3]
Within the Family[]
Gempuku[]
As part of their gempuku, the Hida required its students to go alone into the Shadowlands and return with the severed head of a Tainted creature. [4]
Tradition[]
Hida spent as much time reading military theory as they did physically training. Tests were frequently performed in mock war rooms where everyone crouched around a map covered in miniature armies. [5]
Lands[]
The Hida lands were rocky and dry, the ground marred with the crushing footfalls of repeated marches. [6]
Politics[]
Daimyō of the Hida[]
Since the founding of the Crab Clan the daimyō of the Hida family had been the Crab Clan Champion.
Vassals of the Hida[]
The following were the vassal families of the Hida:
