Hida Sukune was the youngest son of the Crab Clan Champion Hida Kisada. Hida Yakamo was his brother and heir to the Crab and Hida O-Ushi was his sister. [1]
Appearance and Demeanor[]
His mother had died shortly after his birth, and Sukune was a weak child who had feeble lungs, arrythmic heart and aching joints, [2] with a pale face. He had a difficult relation with his brother and father, who openly disliked his weakness, uncommon for a Crab. [1] He earned great renown as a tactician and strategist. [3]
Training[]
Sukune was a Hida Tactician who embodied the idea of brains over brawn. While his older brother and sister were honing their skills in single combat, Sukune spent his youth poring over the scrolls of the Hida family library, absorbing centuries of lore and combat tactics to bring to bear on the battlefield. While most Crab samurai rush into the fray, Sukune considered all options available before committing to a given course of action, allowing him to uncover potent solutions that might not be obvious at first glance. Sukune believed that if he could outsmart the Shadowlands and deliver victory to his clan, he owuld finally be able to prove his worth in his father's eyes. [4] Since child he loved to spend time in the Hida Palace's war room, to develop his own approach to Crab warfighting. During his gempuku he managed to kill a wounded troll in the Shadowlands which was feasting on the slaughtered remains of a pack of goblins, and this feat allowed him to enter the famed Sunda Mizu Dōjō, despite his lack of martial prowess. Sukune studied carefully teatrises on war such as Akodo's Leadership, Hiruma's The Way of the Scout, Hida Banuken's The Art of Positional Warfare, or Akodo Toma's Before the Strike, amnog others. [2]
Kikyo[]
Sukune was stationed at Kuni Castle, and in 1123 he had a meeting there, where his father appointed him as commander of an expedition to the Shinomen Mori, with his sister Hida O-Ushi as his lieutentant. The Nezumi Rememberer of the Tattered Ear Ros'ku had found an armor in the Cave of Bloody Ghost Fire, within the dreaded Shadowed Swamps, which would be Kikyo, the armor forged by Hida Osano-wo for his lost brother Hida Atarashi and which in the 10th century was supposedly lost in the ill-fated expedition led by the General Hida Chuku into the Shadowlands. The Crab expedition faced many dangers in their way to the Cave, such an encounter with an onikuma, the disobedience of Hida Amoro while fighting a gashadokuro, or the madness of the Witch Hunter Kuni Kana, but eventually Sukune managed to retrieve the armor and return it back to the Hida Palace, but without its mempō, which was not found with the set of armor. For his success, Sukune assumed command of the reserve army at Kuni Castle. [2]
The Wall is Breached[]
The hordes of Akuma no Oni breached through the Kaiu Wall and overrun the Crab defenses, marching northwest, to the Shinomen Forest. Kisada was wounded during the defense of the Castle of the Forgotten, a spear broke through his armor and pierced his belly. He delegated command on Sukune, who assembled the forces of the Crab and several Minor Clans in the shores of the Cherry Blossom Snow Lake. The Phoenix Clan army led by Shiba Tsukune joined them, [5] and four days later the Dragon Clan army led by Togashi Yokuni did the same. The next day the Battle of Cherry Blossom Snow began, and the Rokugani forces were bolstered by the arrival of the Crane army led by Daidoji Uji, [6] who was sent to a pass single-handely defended by Yoritomo. Bayushi Yojiro, new Champion of his clan, joined the command group. He offered the Yogo Jitte, awakened by the revered magistrate Soshi Saibankan himself. Among its many qualities was the ability to reveal the lies of the Shadowlands, so, if it was brought close to Akuma no Oni, it would be forced to reveal itself. Yokuni accepted the jitte, but in return Yojiro accepted that Togashi and Kitsuki advisors shall keep watch over the affairs of the Scorpion to vouch for their sincerity, tarnished by Shoju's actions. [7] Forced to reveal himself on the battlefield, the Oni Lord was confronted and killed. [8]
