Harun ibn Mahmour ibn Ja'far al-Hakim reigned as the Caliph, Defender of the Faith, Sultan of al-Zawira, Beloved by God, and Supreme Leader of the Qamari Peoples. [1]

Tyrant[]

Harun was a wicked man, who never met a vice he did not enjoy, nor a sin he would not happily commit to gain more wealth and power for himself. No all his emirs and sultans followed his lead with perfect loyalty. To maintain his rule on the different Caliphate vassals, Harun took their heirs as hostages, such as Saadiyah al-Mozedu, daughter of a Bandar emir. He also resorted in blackmail and the threat of his armies to keep them under his control. [2]

Rift with the Unicorn[]

The Caliph had long cast an envious eye on the Unicorn holdings outside of Rokugan, [3] which included the Sand Road and the Hidden Valley. Harun wished to claim dominion over all Qamarists, as the Prophet's rightful heir, to prove his strength to his recalcitrant subjects, and to prove his virtue to the prayerful. In 1123 word of a Unicorn-Lion war reached him, and he decided the time had come to raise against the Unicorn. Harun met the Unicorn delegation led by Shinjo Shono, heir of the Unicorn, and took advantage taking him prisoner through his main enforcer, the sorceress Mandana. Eventually Shono and his entourage escaped from al-Zawira, and married with Saadiyah, to sign a treaty against their common enemy, the caliph. [2]
