Hantei Yugozohime was the Emperor of Rokugan who reigned after the Gozoku was removed from power.

Gozoku[]

During the late fourth century three samurai, the champions of Crane, Phoenix Clan, and Scorpion Clans, conspired against the Emperor. Calling themselves the Gozoku, they banded together and kidnapped the Emperor's heir, forcing the Emperor to grant them certain political concessions. After the Emperor's death, the Gozoku prepared to install that heir on the Throne as their puppet emperor. [1]

Empress[]

While the Emperor's sons had all been fostered to daimyō in the Crane, Phoenix, and Scorpion Clans to be raised to be subservient to the Gozoku, his youngest child, Yugozohime, had been raised by the Lion. She was taught on the arts of war and instilled in her a reverence for Bushidō and the honor of her Imperial ancestors. When the Emperor died, Yugozohime challenged her eldest brother to a duel, killed him, and claimed the Throne for herself. The Gozoku were completely unprepared for this turn of events, and the new Emperor quickly broke their hold on the Imperial government. [2]

Gaijin Arrival[]

In the fifth century a fleet from Pavarre arrived to Rokugan, hoped to conduct trade with the Emerald Empire. This created much political consternation as the leaders and courtiers of the clans debated how to react to the strangers. [3] Foreigners came to the Imperial City seeking an audience with Emperor Yugozohime: a trade guild that dealt in numerous lands, including the realm of the Myantu Alliance, Asturiam, even the Vyzantari Kingdom. To the court's surprise, she assented, allowing the traders to establish a post there. The Mantis Clan rose to prominence during this time, becoming a substantial sea power by trading with, and occasionally preying upon, foreign vessels in the waters near Rokugan and beyond. [4] After two years of controversy, the Hantei grew tired of the uproar caused by the gaijin. Yugozohime abruptly ended the open trade agreement with them and ordered to leave her lands immediately. [3] The gaijin refused to accept her edict, making a terrific attack against the capital Otosan Uchi. This act bolstered the Rokugani, who managed to defeat and drive off the gaijin ships in the Battle of White Stag. [5] Those who managed to flee to their ships were confronted by the massed fleets of the Crane and Mantis Clans. [6]

Death[]

The Empress herself had been killed during the attack, and no mercy was shown to the gaijin on Rokugan's soil. [6]
