People |
Hantei X was the tenth Emperor of Rokugan and the father of Otomo Jama, who would later become known as the infamous Iuchiban.
Family[]
Hantei X was son of Hantei Yugozohime's cousin and his Doji wife. [1]
Lineage[]
Hantei X was the first Emperor that had no direct link with the previous Emperor, Hantei Retsuhime. Because of this, the scholars had to 'backtrack' on the Imperial lineage, in search of the nearest link. [1] Probably for this reason, he gave up his gempukku name, beginning the practice of using the Emperor's family name as his title ("the Hantei"). [2] His name had been lost from the histories, and he was referred to in texts simply as "He who sacrificed his name for the empire." [3]
Reign[]
Disdain for Shugenja[]
Hantei X was known for his distaste of shugenja, and instead preferred to sponsor the Brotherhood of Shinsei and other monastic sects. This led to a minor division between the shugenja and monk communities. [4]
Education System[]
Among his other accomplishment was the establishment of the first system of education in Rokugan. [1]
Scorpion Spy Network[]
During his rule, the Otomo family, jealous of the role of the Bayushi ninja network (whose functions overlapped theirs) started a campaign of rumors. When these reached the ears of the Emperor, he ordered the Scorpion Clan Champion Bayushi Hajioki to dismantle the network. Since his time and for much time later, the ninja were considered gone. [5]
Lying Darkness[]
The destruction of the ninja network led to the creation of one of the most dangerous threats to Rokugan. One of the ninja driven from the Scorpion, Goju, was full of pain and isolation. The man was eventually touched by the Nothing, and infected by Goju's madness, the Nothing was twisted into the Lying Darkness. The new entity was an evil power which would try to undo the world. [6]
