Hantei Retsuhime was the second Hantei Empress and ninth Emperor of Rokugan.
Parents[]
Retsuhime was the eldest daughter of the Empress Hantei Yugozohime and Doji Usan. She was an infant when in 442 her mother died in the Battle of White Stag, so Hantei Muhaki, her mother's uncle, became the Emperor. [1] Retsuhime had three younger sisters. [2]
Married[]
Retsuhime did not follow the tradition of marrying the heir of the Doji, who was indeed a terrible boor. She instead chose to marry a Matsu, gaining the scorn of many courtiers. The Empress backed her decision despite some claimed she was seeking to ensure her own rulership rather than obeying the dictates of a powerful husband. [3] She had no direct descendant, [4] perhaps as a result of Amaterasu's dislike of the match.[citation needed]
Empress[]
Shiba Murayasu[]
After becoming Empress, Retsuhime requested her childhood friend Shiba Murayasu join the Seppun Guest Home dojo as a sensei. [5]
Expanding the Tortoise Charter[]
Retsuhime granted an audience to the aged Tortoise daimyo, Kasuga. The next day, she announced the Tortoise charter had been expanded: henceforth they would also be caretakers for the Imperial City of Otosan Uchi, keeping the streets clean, repairing the homes, and performing other such menial but necessary tasks. [6]
Peaceful Times[]
Her reign was quite peaceful, apart from a few border conflicts by the Dragon and Phoenix Clans against Yobanjin tribes past the northern borders of Rokugan. [4] Shortly before Retsuhime's reign ended. the wars ceased, and the barbarian tribes were forced farther northward. [2]
Events under her rule[]
Retsuhime was gifted a jade statue known as The Council by the Asahina Daimyo Asahina Kamatari during her reign, [7] Ryoko Owari Toshi was founded, [8] and a Togashi monk created a new style of gardening called rock gardening. [9]
Successor[]
After the Empress died the line of succession was unclear, [10] Her successor Hantei X was actually the son of a cousin of Hantei VII and his Doji wife. [11]

Winter Court:Kyuden Seppun claims that Hantei XVII requested Murayasu become a sensei at the Seppun Dojo upon becoming Emperor, but he ruled over a 100 years after Murayasu's death. Hantei Retsuhime was the only Emperor who was crowned in the time period after Murayasu's rise as full sensei (c.444) and death 479. |
