The Handles were an Otokodate of heimin warriors who served as "unofficial" deputies in the Lion city of Tonfajutsen, working together with samurai magistrates. They were quite proficient in the use of tonfa, the peasant weapon from which the city garnered its name, and also gave the name of the group. [1]
