The Great Wall of the North, also known as the Northern Wall, [1] Great Northern Climb, [2] or Northern Mountains, [3] was a range with permanently snowcapped peaks, [4] unforgiving mountains that marked Rokugan's northern border. South to it extended the territory of the Dragon, Unicorn, and Phoenix Clans. [5] Their rocky feet were washed by the ocean in the east. This vast range separated Rokugan from the dry, barren sprawl of lands to the north, which could only be readily accessed through the treacherous pass known as Defiant's Path. [6] Volcanoes occasionally erupted in this mountain range. [7] The section of the range known as the Dragon mountains provided the Dragon Clan with bounteous and often wondrous veins of ore. The Serpent's Tail Mine contained the invaluable trifecta of gold, iron, and jade. [8]
Inhabitants[]
On the elevated slopes above the timberline, various groups of humans and spirits lived detached from Imperial society. Mountain forests were favored by the tengu, and solitary Great Tengu were said to dwell upon high summits. The rich game in this area enabled the nomadic lifestyle of the Yobanjin, those humans who rejected the rule of the Kami; overlapping their territory were the hidden settlements of another group of religious outcasts, the Perfect Land Sect. [9] The Dragon mountains were thickly forested and abundant in wild animals. [10]
