Great Tengu was the title given to a spiritual and philosophical leader who was the highest authority of one of the individual courts that made up Sakkaku and Chikushō-dō, though this leader was not necessarily a tengu (one of the Five Ancient Races that ruled before long before the Kami fell). In Sakkaku, the animal spirits who had lived the longest and cultivated their animal nature most perfectly become Great Tengu. In Chikushō-dō, animal spirits who most closely resembled humans become Great Tengu, postponing their reincarnation as full humans in order to instruct others. [1] This individual was in charge of these courts. Chikushō-dō's oral tradition maintained that one of these Great Tengu, who renounced his name and identified himself simply as "the High Shinseist Priest," learned the Tao of Shinsei personally from Shinsei and Shiba so he could bring Enlightenment to animals. Sakkaku, on the other hand, maintained he did so as an elaborate joke that Chikushō-dō‎ had yet to comprehend. [2]
