A Gaki
Gaki was a soul corrupted thoroughly by desire, and was reborn into Gaki-dō. Although its name was sometimes translated as "hungry ghost," a gaki was not a shade that failed to pass on; all gaki had been through Meido and been found disappointing, mediocre, or below average. Each gaki's previous misdeeds were neither so violent as to consign them to Tōshigoku, the Realm of Slaughter, nor so base and evil as to banish them to Jigoku proper, but they had not done nearly well enough to warrant an animal rebirth, either. Gateways to Ningen-dō[]
It was all too easy to escape Gaki-dō, and some edges seemed to blur and merge into some of the worst parts of Ningen-dō, such as mass graves, the sites of battles and massacres, desecrated temples, fouled wildernesses, and the roughest neighborhoods of large cities. Most Gaki were possessed of a terrible hunger, and the living smell especially delicious. [1] Mortal priests of Emma-Ō believed that Gaki-dō had become overcrowded, and the Fortune was so overworked that sometimes a soul transformed before he could get to them, so gaki began appearing in Meido, or pushed into the borders of the realm, and eventually they were back into Ningen-dō.
