The Fox Clan was one of the Minor clans of the Emerald Empire. [1] Kyūden Kitsune was their ancestral seat of power. [2]
History[]
Founding[]
The tiny remnant of the Ki-Rin Clan who had stayed behind while the rest of their clan traveled eventually settled near Shiro Shiba under Phoenix protection. They were nearly slaughtered by the Lion Clan during the Lion march on Phoenix lands in the Lion-Phoenix War. After a truce was called, the Lion were granted the Ki-Rin lands, the remnant Ki-Rin samurai were given independent status. New lands were given [3] by Emperor Hantei Genji, with the territory encompassing Kitsune Forest, and the remaining Ki-Rin changed their name to the Fox Clan in honor of their new home. [4] Their founder was the hunter Shinun who was led to Chikushō-dō by two foxes she had freed from her traps—fox spirits who helped found the Kitsune family bloodline. [5]
Kitsune Forest[]
The Kitsune forest had already been claimed by spirits, and the Fox Clan had to adapt to the rules of their new home. Through the guidance of the kitsune fox spirits of Senkyō, they achieved harmony. In return for the Fox Clan's respect and reverence, the spirits of Kitsune Forest gave the clan their protection. [4]
Ki-rin Ancestry[]
Once the followers of Shinjo who remained behind in the Empire, the Kitsune family of the Fox Clan was noted for its scholarship, its knowledge of medicinal plants, and the subtle magic of its shugenja. The Kitsune family also had an alliance of sorts with the kitsune fox-spirits of their homeland, and it was rumored that Fox samurai have intermarried with the spirits many times over the generations. [6] Those who inherited the Blood of the Fox became shapeshifters. [7]
Winter Court[]
The Fox Clan was honored to play host to the Imperial Winter Court twice in the early centuries of the Empire. [8]
Crane Alliance[]
In the 12th century an alliance with the Crane Clan was forged, under the arrangement of the wedding of the Crane Clan Champion Doji Hotaru with Kuzunobu. [1]
