Forbidden City
The Forbidden City was the Emperor's personal lands, [1] located in the center of Otosan Uchi, within the enchanted walls of the Ekohikei. [2]
Appearance[]
The Forbidden City was an irregularly shaped piece of land surrounded by its own low but thick and well-defended wall. Only two gates allowed passage through this wall: the main gate that the Emperor and their visitors use, and the much smaller Necessary Gate, used by servants and hinin. The heart of the Forbidden City was the Imperial Palace, located atop an artificial plateau known as the Imperial Mound. [2] Its streets were paved with cobblestone, avoiding the usual mud found on other Rokugani cities during the rainy season. [3] Some believed that the Forbidden City was designed to mirror the Heavenly Palace of Eternal Life in Tengoku, and some religious intellectuals argued that there was a secret shrine in the Forbidden City that was a doorway to Tengoku. [4]
Guesthouses[]
Only the Emperor, the Emperor's immediate family, and the handful of elite samurai who run the Imperial Court were permitted to live within the Forbidden City. The Hantei resided there for eight months out of the year. Away from the Imperial Mound, the rest of the Forbidden City's interior was taken up by a sprawling complex of gardens, home to the Temple to Hantei, and the official guest homes of the seven Great Clans, [5] to house honored visitors and high-standing resident members.
