The False Paths were dangerous traps which laid in the way of those who sought Enlightenment. A monk who attempted to grasp too much power too quickly might stumble onto a False Path, going astray. These paths could lead to corruption, [1] or even madness. [2]

The Brotherhood of Shinsei remained vigilant against any False Paths, and when a sect fell, a Great Convocation was held declaring the doctrine heretical and expelling those who would not give it up. [3]
