Elementalists, also known as Shindōshi, [1] or Shugenja, were mystical practitioners and the envoys of the kami, [2] samurai who served as priests and conduits between the mortal and sacred realms. [3] They practiced shugendō, the prayers [4] also known as invocations, powerful appeals to the kami, to wield astonishing elemental powers. [5] They were part of the clergy. [6]
Duty[]
Shugenja were the elite priests of the samurai class who turned their unmatched spiritual potential to the researching and understanding the nature of the universe, suppressing the powers of the Shadowlands, and war among the clans. [7]
Training[]
Trained by secretive schools, every shugenja was privy to secrets unknown to the other clergy across the Empire, and each school worked hard to hide the full extent of its mystic knowledge from the others. [8] As a result, these insular groups were fiercely competitive with one another, and each called to the kami in a unique way. [9]
Customs[]
Shugenja used to dress in robes [10] and were protected by devoted yōjimbō. [11] Their lords might give them tasks suited to priests, researchers, librarians, warrior-priests, shrine keepers, or spiritual advisors to daimyō. Rarely, shugenja might be guards, artisans, or magistrates. [12]
