Doji Yasurugi was a member of the Crane Clan, eldest son of Doji herself and twin brother of Doji Konishiko. [2]
Blacksmith[]
In addition to exceeding his father in the art of the duel, Yasurugi was an accomplished blacksmith. [2] He was taught by Kaiu himself how to forge tsurugi, with a technique that used three folds on the steel blade. [3] According to legend, Yasurugi was once snatched away by a tengu to its kingdom in the cloud, because the bird spirit was fixated upon Yasurugi's resplendent garb. After the tengu realized there was a man within the robes, it offered him a new way of folding steel with the soul. Yasurugi boasted that he would create the five finest swords the tengu had ever seen. [2] His tengu sensei spirited him to Senkyō, where he learned tengu secrets of swordsmithing. [4] With such knowledge Yasurugi forged a tsurugi intended for his uncle the Emperor Hantei. His tengu sensei named the sword Kunshu, and taught him how to forge five fold swords, [3] the Five Sacred Blades of the Crane. [5] Among the other blades was Shukujo, which became the ancestral sword of the Crane. [2]
Death[]
When Shinsei called for heroes to face Fu Leng in battle, Doji Yasurugi was the choice to serve as the Crane Clan Thunder. When the time came for him to join the others, a monstrous assassin overtook him on the road and slew him. His sister Konishiko, who had never studied the sword, picked up the fallen Shukujo and volunteered to take her brother's place. Because she was his twin, and because Yasurugi had folded a piece of his own soul into the steel of the sword as the tengu had taught him, when she held the blade, the Crane Clan Thunder lived again.
