Doji Usan was Emerald Champion and the husband of the first Empress of Rokugan Hantei Yugozohime.
Gozoku rule[]
Usan was an anti-Gozoku nobleman [1] trained in the Kakita Academy. [2]
Emerald Champion[]
After the fall of the Gozoku conspiracy in 435 and the execution of the late Emerald Champion, the Gozoku leader and Crane Clan Champion Doji Raigu, the Empress Hantei Yugozohime celebrated a new tournament which was won by Usan. [1]
Winter Court - 436[]
In 436 Usan attended winter court at Kyuden Ikoma. There, he challenged his former sensei Kakita Umaro, accusing him of being a Gozoku agent. After Usan Killed Umaro Yugozohime choose him as her consort. [3]
Marriage[]
Usan feared his actions in cleansing the Empire had abused the office of the Emerald Champion. The Empress offered him to become the Imperial Consort, allowing him to step down without loss of face. [4] He gave up his claim to the post of Emerald Champion to be Yugozohime's husband. [3] During two years the post was vacant. [5] Records did show that the ronin Mochiko did win the Test of the Emerald Champion after Usan turned down the position, so there was credence to that story. [6] The middle-aged wavewoman named Mochiko was actually the former Matsu Daimyo Matsu Mochihime. [1]
Empress' death[]
In 442 Yugozohime was killed by a cannon volley in the Battle of White Stag, but Usan survived. The new Emperor was selected from the Hantei family, Yugozohime's uncle Hantei Muhaki. Yugozohime's eldest daughter, Hantei Retsuhime, was not yet of age to rule. [7] The couple had three younger daughters. [8]
