Doji Morito was the Crane Clan Champion during the rule of Hantei XX.

Influence[]

Morito relationship with the Emperor was strong. His own sister was married to Hantei XX. [1] In 660 Morito had led his Clan for nearly fourty years, well past the usual age of retirement, and almost every influential samurai in Rokugan was in his debt. [2]

Great Famine[]

In 662 during winter court at Kyuden Doji Morito mocked the desperate plea made by the Crab Clan Champion Hida Tsuneko in front of the Emperor, asking to dismiss the punitive taxes the Crab Clan were paying. The Daidoji and the Yasuki Merchants had been fighting a trade war over rice, and it turned the Crane political power against the Crab. [3]

Starvation led to War[]

War with the Crab[]

In 663 the Crab began the Rice War, and the Crane lands were invaded. In the Battle of Honor's Flight the Crab seized Jukami Mura and the Daidoji Daimyo Daidoji Katsunan was cut down by Tsuneko herself. In 664 the Emperor sent the Imperial Legions to support the defenders and the Crab admitted defeat at the gates of Mura Sabishii Toshi. [4]

Attacked by the Lion[]

In 664 the Lion Clan Champion Akodo Masahisa levied a massive army of hungry ashigaru, unleashing them to the Crane lands. Morito was caught off-guard and, weakened by the previous Rice War with the Crab, could not make their stand. The Emerald Champion Akodo Kenburo met his adopted brother Masahisa and convinced him to return back with the supplies already seized. [5]

Tainted Fleet[]

In 665 Morito hired the Mantis Clan fleet to destroy a shadowlands fleet which harassed the southern coast of Rokugan. He agreed to marry his daughter Doji Saneyo to the Mantis Clan Champion, Tetsuken, if he succeeded. The Mantis destroyed the tainted ships when they were sailing towar their true target, Otosan Uchi. In the fight Tetsuken sacrificed his ship, crew and life to get the victory. [6] Legend said that after Tetsuken's death Saneyo shaved her head and joined a monastery. [7]
