Kitsune Kuzunobu was a member of the Fox Clan who married as Doji Kuzunobu to the Crane Clan Champion Doji Hotaru as part of a political alliance of his clan with the Crane [1] arranged by his great-aunt and lord, Kitsune Gohei. He had a younger cousin, Kitsune Itsuki. [2]
Appearance and Demeanor[]
Doji Kuzunobu had a long, dark brown hair that he wore unbound, featuring a mischievous smile that always seemed to play upon his lips. He was among the most graceful and lyrical of courtiers. Kuzunobu served as Hotaru's stand-in at countless courts and ceremonies. He longed to return to the Kitsune Forest, where he grew up among his Clan. Kuzunobu had inherited Blood of the Fox, being a shapeshifter. [3]
Wedding at Kyotei Castle[]
Doji Kuzunobu was a guest in the wedding between the Tsume Daimyō Tsume Takashi and Shiba Itsuyo, daughter of the Lord of Nikesake in the Kyotei Castle, a Crane stronghold close to Toshi Ranbo. His attendance was somewhat perfunctory, however, as his mere presence allows Hotaru to relay her approval of her vassal without diverting her attention from the war at hand. [4] Eventually a group of samurai exposed a plot devised by Akodo Maeda, the last member of the Damasu family, who wished to recover their ancestral castle, which had been conquered by Takashi's father, Tsume Retsu, one generation ago. Maeda, who had been raised as a geisha, was slain in the process. Takashi, heartbroken at being united with his former lover only to lose her again, resigned his position and committed seppuku after fulfilling his last duty as lord in marrying Itsuyo. Kuzunobu accepted her oaths of fealty to the Doji family and recognized her as the new lord. [5]
Elemental Imbalance[]
For some time, Crane shipping had been plagued with losses from pirates linked to the Mantis. In 1123 some of the Asahina sensed an elemental imbalance connected with the storms that had also been plaguing the Crane ships. Hotaru recalled Kuzunobu from Shizuka Toshi and sent him to represent the Crane among his former kin, to seek out solutions to appease the offended kami off the Crane coasts. [6] Kakita Kaezin accompanied Kuzunobu in order to protect him from threats that lurked in the perilous Kitsune forest. [7] There he met Kakita Asami, and the aged sensei Akodo Kage. Gohei granted the aid requested by the Crane Clan after his cousin removed the disturbing presence of the Lion courtier, who had been sought something for his Clan to claim as a pretext for attacking the Fox. [2]
