Shiba Itsuyo was a trained warrior of the Phoenix Clan, daughter of the lord of Nikesake. [1] She wed into the Tsume family as Tsume no Doji Itsuyo and became the Tsume Daimyō after her husband's death. [2]
Appearance[]
Itsuyo was a trained bushi, although she looked more like a courtier at first glance. She used to wears her long blackbrown hair loose, with a golden-feather hair ornament above her left ear. [3] She was a skilled soldier, if largely untested, and had a reputation of quiet strength. While a student, Itsuyo once thwarted an assassination attempt upon her sensei while the pair was meditating in a shrine. Despite being unarmed, she easily dispatched their attackers. [4]
Wedding at Kyotei Castle[]
In 1123 Itsuyo moved to Kyotei Castle to wed Doji Takashi, the Tsume Daimyō, as part of a political arrangement with the Crane Clan. [2] After the marriage, she fully intended to assume all the duties of the castle lord in everything but name, having heard that her future husband was more interested in the privileges of power than its responsibilities. [3]
Tsume Daimyō[]
Before the wedding a plot framed by Akodo Maeda was exposed by a group of samurai, and the Damasu Daimyō was slain in the process. Maeda had been the last member of the defunct Damasu family, former owners of the Kyotei Castle. Raised as a geisha, Maeda was lover to Takashi, and eventually she killed his father Doji Retsu as a revenge of her family's demise. Heartbroken at being united with his former lover only to lose her again, Takashi resigned his position and committed seppuku after fulfilling his last duty as lord in marrying Itsuyo. Doji Kuzunobu, husband to the Crane Clan Champion Doji Hotaru and one of the wedding's guests, accepted her oaths of fealty to the Doji family and recognized her as the new lord. [2]
Marching to Toshi Ranbo[]
After the loss of Kyūden Kakita Hotaru decided to secure the northern flank and find a refuge for the northern armies. She moved to Kyotei Castle, where she promised to Itsuyo to send word to Kakita Ryoku to begin making a suitable match, got the support of the Phoenix Clan after a a messenger was sent to the governor of Nikesake, and moved north, surrounding Toshi Ranbo with the Daidoji from the south and southwest, the Tsume from the east, and the Shiba from the north. Hotaru wished to reassert her Clan's claim over Toshi Ranbo, but first, she would attempt diplomacy with the Chief Magistrate of the city, Bayushi Yojiro. [5] Both sides arranged that Yojiro would permit the Crane Clan forces to reinforce those of the Imperial Legion's and winter there, while Hotaru would accept the Chief Magistrate's authority there as the Emperor's chief enforcer.
