Dōshin, peasant enforcers, [1] were assistants to either a yoriki or a magistrate's deputy. [2] They were commonly heimin, with powers normally restricted to routine investigation, but generally only for crimes involving commoners. [3] These "peasant enforcers" had been given the duty of watching over other heimin and burakumin. Dōshin were responsible for anything from a single village to a city district. They carried certain types of primarily nonlethal weapons, but they were only legally able to employ them against their fellow commoners. [4]
