Dōjō was the Rokugani word for a place of instruction, practice, and study, [1] but usually it referred specifically to those that trained bushi. [2] Most large estates housed at least one dōjō where students trained in the arts of a particular clan tradition. [3] Samurai practiced there techniques perfected over centuries of effort and mastery. [4]
Appearance[]
A dōjō normally comprised a central building, a training courtyard (separate from the main parade ground) that surrounded it, and one or more student barracks connected to the central building and separated from the castle's barracks for adult soldiers. The main building, considered the dōjō proper, had a single large chamber with a polished wooden floor, walls lined with practice weapons, and with plaques listing the names of past students. [2]
