The Cup of Defeat was an ancient wooden bowl carved by Asahina craftmen to the Emperor, an offering from a man who tried to win the heart of Lady Doji and who filled it with his tears when Kakita won her hand. [1] It was given to the loser of the Bowmen's Wager's final, a contest held at every winter court. The loser had to drink the water of the cup, and ill fortune was rumored to follow those who drink from it. [2]
