The Crab Clan was one of the seven Great Clans, serving as the Defenders of Rokugan. They spent their lives upon the Kaiu Wall, standing vigilant along the southern border of Rokugan to defend against the next attack from the Shadowlands. [2]
Crab Clan[]
Families of the Crab Clan[]
Founded by the Kami Hida, the Crab consisted of five families, the Kuni, the Kaiu, the Hiruma, the Yasuki, and the Hida family, which was the ruling family. The Yasuki family had joined the Crab after they broke its ties with the Crane Clan. [3]
Duty[]
The Crab Clan has the duty of guarding the Emerald Empire against the horrors of the Shadowlands, with an impressive strength and honorable determination. Other saw the Crab as impolite brutes, too pigheaded to comprehend the intricacies of court decorum. [2] Grim, pragmatic, lacking in social graces, and often violent, the Crab were often looked down upon as uncultured brutes. [4] The Crab had one of the largest standing military force in Rokugan. [5] Crab military units were small, tightly knit, and paranoid, molding their weapons and tactics to fight an inhuman enemy. [6]
Military[]
Crab armies were composed primarily of armored infantry and archers, and their medics were among the finest in Rokugan. They mastered an incredible defense, had excellent tacticians, and a highly skilled battlefield support, but they were more slow to muster, and more reactive than offensive. Their siganture warrior was the Hida Defender. [7]
History[]
The Yasuki Joins the Crab[]
The Yasuki family, chafing under the demands of the haughty Crane Clan, broke its ties with the Crane and offered fealty to the Crab, who eagerly accepted. [3] The Yasuki War in the late fourth century [8] was one of the first interclan wars in the Emerald Empire, and it led the Emperor to forbid direct warfare between the Great Clans. [9]
