Courtesan
Courtesans were woman prostitute, especially one whose clients were members of men of high social standing. In the Burning Sands enslaved women were forced to become courtesans.[1] In Rokugan, the practice walked between dishonor and disgrace. Nevertheless, it was common between kuge and buke alike, and some Emperors took multiple concubines. [2] Even samurai-ko of sufficient station sometimes took concubines, though this was prone to much gossiping.[2]
Courtesans were usually daughters sold to geisha houses by their parents and to samurai by poor merchants. The courtesans of the Emperor, however, were usually samurai given as gifts of a clan — an engagement with dowries and negotiations akin to a marriage. [3]
