The castle was constructed in the Rinkaku style, which placed the keep in the center and two baileys ranging concentrically around it. The outermost bailey housed the lowest ranking bushi, while the innermost housed those next in seniority. The keep itself housed the Governor, his family and personal retainers.
The castle was surrounded by a dry moat, which only had one bridge crossing. The crossing was manned by guards at all times, and well lit by braziers and torches during the night.
