Chonin was the Rokugani word for headman, the headmaster of a village, [1] or in the cities for the guild headman of a shiamachi, a district. [2]

Duty[]

The headman accompanied by his doshin would meet with any samurai which would appear at his village, to address any issue. The samurai would be led to the local inn, or to the headman's hosue, where food, sake, and bedding was offered. These visits were included in the tax instance, so the village's daimyo could repay for their hospitality. [3]
