Brigade (nicknamed tetsubo) was a Crab fighting unit which included 5-8 companies but rarely exceeded 1000 soldiers. A brigade was always led by a shireikan. A brigade consisted of a variety of unit types so that it might serve as a viable fighting force without any support for a reasonable amount of time. [1]
