Benten, Lady of Love and Beauty, [1] was the Fortune of Arts and Romantic Love, one of the Seven Fortunes, [2] muse of artists, diplomats, and those who yearned with love. [3] She was regarded as patron of the Crane Clan. [4]
Appearance[]
Benten appeared as an elegant woman with dark-brown skin and wet, black hair. Her mount was the five-headed dragon, her symbol the biwa, and her sacred place the river. Benten was particularly popular with young samurai before gempuku, who were in the thick of their education and overwhelmed with poetry to memorize and calligraphy to practice, and who were also afluttered with romantic feelings for other youths. Playwrights, actors, puppeteers, and other entertainers venerated Benten as their patron. [5]
