Beiden Pass
Beiden Pass, the Crossroads of the Empire, was the only one mountain pass of the Spine of the World Mountains which opened wide enough to allow an army through. It connected the Lion Clan's southern provinces to the northeast edge of Scorpion lands. Beiden Pass was the most direct and safest route through the Spine and the most popular one for caravans. Historically, controlling the pass meaned controlling trade and travel in central Rokugan. A low rocky hill rose just below the north end of the pass, and there, where Shiro Matsu dominated the pass. [1] It was named for the legendary monk who once single-handedly defended it. [2]
Contested Holding[]
Beiden Pass saw many conflicts over its control, particularly between the Lion and Scorpion Clans, whose lands lied north and south of the pass, respectively. In the mid-eighth century, these two clans fought yet another bloody conflict over access to the pass, which ended inconclusively. The subsequent treaty confirmed the two clans' holdings of land in the vicinity of the pass. [3] The pass was protected by the troops garrisoned at Beiden City and also by a secondary fortress at Beiden Overlook. [4]
