People

Bayushi Yojiro, the Honest Scorpion, [1] was a bushi and Emerald Magistrate of the Scorpion Clan.

Family[]

Yojiro had a sister, Bayushi Mikuru, who had married in the Otomo family. [2]

Appearance and Demeanor[]

Yojiro was considered handsome by his peers. He was a talented carving artisan. [3]

Honest Scorpion[]

Yojiro did not wear the traditional mask of a Scorpion samurai, preferring instead to wear robes with high collars that shadowed the lower part of his face. [1]

Emerald Tournament[]

In 1123, as an Emerald Magistrate, Yojiro was given control over planning the Emerald Championship tournament summoned by Hantei the Thirty-Eighth. The Imperial Advisor Bayushi Kachiko asked him to sabotage the tournament, to use his crafting to ensure Bayushi Aramoro became Emerald Champion. Yojiro gave to his sister Mikuru a kanzashi with mirrored beads, and she had to use it during the tournament to blind Aramoro's opponent during the final duel. Should the mirror's reflection be contested, Mikuru must offer to commit seppuku for the dishonor of the accident. Eventually, Yojiro decided that of he mst tip the scales in Aramoro's favor, so too should he tip the scales for his opponent, until they were balanced once more. [2] He met Akodo Toturi, the other Emerald Champion finalist, and gave him information enough to warn Toturi about the deception. The Lion Clan Champion managed to overcome his blinded eyes, becoming the winner of the tournament and Emerald Champion, [1] but Yojiro lose the trust of his Clan, included his sister Mikuru and the dangerous beauty Kachiko. If Yojiro would fail twice, Scorpion shugenja would bind his soul to a tree in Traitor's Grove. [3]

Whispers of Shadow and Steel[]

Bayushi Yojiro (TCG) 2

Bayushi Yojiro

When Bayushi Aramoro was arrested for killing Kitsuki Obo, a minor Dragon official, in the Scorpion-controlled City of Lies, [3] Yojiro was sent to help investigate and bring the killer to justice. He was placed in an impossible situation, forced to betray those he swore loyalty to. [4] He eventually discovered that Obo, a Kitsuki Investigator, had been killed ten years ago by Soshi Ezo, a master shinobi, and replaced by him. Ezo had created a rogue dōjō involving the forbidden art of kagenari, and Aramoro had killed him in order to end his illicit activities. Yojiro released Aramoro as innocent of the murder, and Soshi Aoi, one of the Ezo's students, confessed to killing Obo in revenge for his part in her sale to a geisha house as a child, only one victim of many. The Scorpion Clan was above reproach, because Ezo's activities were kept in secret, and Obo's scandalous activities at Ryokō Owari had weakened the Dragon power particularly among the investigators. Yojiro was personally praised by his Lord Bayushi Shoju. [3]

Toshi Ranbo[]

Toturi appointed Yojiro as the Chief Magistrate of Toshi Ranbo, [5] replacing Kakita Sukenobu as the city's steward. [6] The Crab Clan negotiated with him the bounty of its jade mine recently located nearby, which would go a long way toward replenishing their depleted supplies needed to fight the Shadowlands. [7]

Emperor's Death[]

Bayushi Shoju was appointed as Imperial Regent shortly after Hantei the Thirty-Eighth was found dead. His Lord sent his wife Kachiko to Toshi Ranbo in the company of the Bayushi Elite Guard, and he had instructed Yojiro on the conditions of her stay: conditions that would prevent her from undermining Shoju's duty any further. [8] Kachiko was kept under house arrest for treason, under the protection of Yojiro. [9] During her stay the city was surrounded by the combined forces of the Daidoji from the south and southwest, the Tsume from the east, and the Shiba from the north. At the head was Doji Hotaru, the Crane Clan Champion, who wished to reassert her Clan's claim over Toshi Ranbo, but first, she would attempt diplomacy. [6] Both sides arranged that Yojiro would permit the Crane Clan forces to reinforce those of the Imperial Legion's and winter there, while Hotaru would accept the Chief Magistrate's authority there as the Emperor's chief enforcer. [10]

Scorpion Champion[]

In the 8th day of the Month of Hida news arrived regarding Shoju had regained the regency with the support of the Lion and the Imperial Legions, and also his declaration as an ally of the Shadowlands, which stripped him of his status as Scorpion Champion. His son Bayushi Dairu was not yet of age, so Kachiko became the new Champion and in turn she passed the mantle to Yojiro, who accepted it. Three days later a Lion army appeared at the gates of Toshi Ranbo, commanded by the Lion Clan Champion Matsu Tsuko. [11]

The Battle of Cherry Blossom Snow[]

In the Month of Togashi Yojiro was retrieving a jitte from a safehouse's secret cache when he was magically transported near the Cherry Blossom Snow Lake by a ward on the weapon. Beside him was Yogo Kikuyo, who was preparing her Black Watch unit to confront Akuma no Oni's horde in the incoming Battle of Cherry Blossom Snow Lake. [12] Yojiro and Kikuyo joined the command group, with Hida Sukune and Togashi Yokuni, among other members of multiple clans. Yojiro offered the Yogo Jitte, awakened by the revered magistrate Soshi Saibankan himself. Among its many qualities was the ability to reveal the lies of the Shadowlands, so, if it was brought close to Akuma no Oni, it would be forced to reveal itself. Yokuni accepted the jitte, but in return Yojiro accepted that Togashi and Kitsuki advisors shall keep watch over the affairs of the Scorpion to vouch for their sincerity, tarnished by Shoju's actions. [13] Forced to reveal himself on the battlefield, the Oni Lord was confronted and killed. [14]

Fighting the Usurpers[]

Yojiro was part of an assembled army of Crane, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion, Dragon, and Unicorn samurai who began the assault of Otosan Uchi. [15] Eventually Mirumoto Hitomi wielding Itsuwari, the ancestral sword of the Scorpion Clan, had crossed swords with the traitor Shoju and cut him down. [16]

Aftermath[]

Yojiro sent Kachiko and her son to the Esteemed Palaces of the Crane. Keeping her at a distance would allow Yojiro the time and space needed to repair the clan's reputation. [16]
