The Battle of the Thundering Shrine in 718 [1] was the largest of many battles between the Crab and Scorpion following the Battle of the Cresting Wave. It was a border skirmish with the Scorpion, fought in the territory around the Shrine of Osano-Wo. The fierce storms and rocky terrain made the fighting extremely difficult for both sides. [2]
Preambles[]
The Crab asked the Scorpion to cede the rich farmlands surrounding the Shrine of Osano-Wo in compensation for the loss of the Hiruma lands. The Scorpion refused; in retaliation, the Crab raided the border and attempted to take several villages by force. [3]
Battle[]
The Scorpion met the Crab in battle near the Shrine itself. Shortly after the battle began a massive thunderstorm erupted, making it difficult for both sides to fight. The Crab won the day, but the Scorpion subsequently persuaded the Emperor to order the Crab to withdraw from the occupied lands. [3]
