The Battle of the Hour of the Wolf was recalled as a tragedy for the Lion Clan. [1]
Preambles[]
Sometime between the seventh and ninth centuries, a combined force of Scorpion and Crane legions sought to push northward, through Beiden Pass, and into the lands of the Lion Clan beyond. Once through the pass, this army turned east, following the south shore of the Lake of Sorrows and marching back toward Crane territory on the northern side of the Spine of the World Mountains. The army then turned south, finally clashing with a Lion army consisting almost entirely of Matsu legions on the northern shore of the Lake of Shining Glass. [2]
Battles[]
On the shore of the Lake of Shining Glass, a ferocious battle ensued. Contrary to normal Rokugani military practice, did not cease with the coming of night. The armies continued to fight illuminated only by torches. It was said that ten thousand samurai were killed during the Hour of the Wolf. With the coming of morning, the battered remnants of both armies withdrew, leaving their dead strewn across the field. So much blood had been spilled that the Lake of Shining Glass had turned crimson; it was later renamed Red Lake. [2]
Aftermath[]
On the anniversary of the Battle of the Hour of the Dog (which they renamed Hour of the Wolf after the horror of the battle), it was said that the lake once more turns red, and blood washed up on its shores. The lake was also said to be haunted. The Lion further considered it sacred, a resting place for their ancestors. [2]
