A Basan
Basan was a Rokugani angry rooster spirit which breathed fire from its mouth. [1] Also known as the mountain rooster, or “basa-basa” after its distinct call, the basan was a native of Chikushō-dō, the Realm of Animals, that sometimes wandered into the Realm of Mortals. Resembling an oversized rooster with vibrant plumage that darkened into a charcoal color when it was threatened, the basan was able to breathe plumes of blue flame, although these flames did not burn unless the basan was angered or frightened. As it was a nocturnal creature, its keening call and brightly exhaled displays made it a nuisance to rural villages, often keeping everyone awake. [2]
