Ascetics were people who had no interest in material wealth, power or glory. They would have minimal amounts of personal possessions, but still felt honor was one of the few things that were important. [1] They also believed that Maya was a deadly illusion which distracted the soul from it's true mission. [2]
Philosophical View[]
The ascetic philosophical view argued that the mortal world was a distraction from Shinsei's wisdom, so those seeking true enlightenment should practice self-denial and withdrawal. These monks argued the Brotherhood of Shinsei should be a reclusive organization that would teach by example but never meddle in worldly affairs. [3]
