The Asahina were a shugenja and pacifist family of the Crane Clan. They were mediators and healers who eschewed violence and spurned the battlefield. Their delicate tsangusuri talismans protected those who marched to war in their stead. [1] The Temple of the Morning Sun was their ancestral seat of power. [citation needed]
Details[]
Duty[]
The Asahina promoted harmony throughout the Crane's lands, their gifted shugenja and star watchers tending to the clan's very soul. [2]
Mon[]
The Asahina family mon was a white crane in flight, holding a peach blossom in its beak. [3]
Philosophy[]
The Asahina were an ascetic, insular family of shugenja, monks, and seers. Living in atonement for their founder's sins, the Asahina were completely devoted pacifists, refusing even to fight in self-defense. The Asahina believed that by creating artifacts and performing good works, they promoted harmony throughout the lands. [3] The Asahina family sought harmony and peace in all things, embodying a philosophy of compassion and pacifism. [4]
Appearance and Demeanor[]
Asahina were reclusive, rarely leaving their temples in the southern Crane provinces. The Asahina were masters of Fu Sui, the art of arranging the environment to attract kami and other positive energies. They were also storytellers, collectors of lore containing esoteric lessons that they related to enraptured audiences through displays of illusion. As astrologists, they mapped the stars and predicted the weather, as well as divining the destinies of those who caught their attention. The Asahina also focused on the creation of ephemeral beauty. Some Asahina had been born with white hair, a feature passed by their cofounder, Doji Kiriko. [5]
Charms[]
Their best-known art was called tsangusuri, the creation of tsang, items with a kami temporarily awakened within. Many Asahina were blacksmiths or armorsmiths in addition to practicing tsangusuri. [6] The Asahina's charms were made of bamboo, folded paper, silk, and bells. They were much more powerful the omamori crafted by shrine-keepers to share their kami's blessings. [7]
Founded[]
The family was named after its founder, Asahina [8] a Phoenix Master of Air in the fourth century. [9]
