The Akodo War College, located in the Castle of the Swift Sword, [1] taught the Akodo Commander school [2] and Akodo Soldier school. [3] Initially a small, simple dōjō dedicated to the teachings of Akodo, it grew into one of the two most prestigious military schools in Rokugan, along with the Kakita Dueling Academy. The oldest military academy in Rokugan, some of the greatest tacticians and warriors of the Empire came from the War College, and it was said that no graduate had ever lost a battle. [4]
Appearance[]
The War College took up more than half of the space within the vast Castle of the Swift Sword. Built like a castle within a castle, it had its own main keep and defenses. Within the main building, screens were moved to make rooms larger or smaller, and the outside spaces were set up for training in summer and autumn, cleared in winter and made ready for war games in spring. The Akodo Military Library was one of its buildings. [3] The halls of the Akodo War College were decorated with war banners taken from famous defeated generals of other clans, and the school maintained an open challenge for anyone to come and take them back. [5]
Tradition[]
The War College accepted only bushi with noble heritage or who had demonstrated exceptional performance in the field. Its curriculum was divided into three seasonal courses. Students engaged in rigorous physical training and weapon mastery through the summer and fall, followed by winter classes in philosophy, tactics, and Bushidō. In the spring, the practical and philosophical were combined in war games. They were expected to set a sterling example for all samurai serving alongside them or under their command. Officers[]
The upper echelon of the War College was to be selected for officer training. Officers learned to lead groups of soldiers, to make tactical assessments, and to organize sieges. Officer candidates must learn from, and pass tests in, five dōjō, displaying mastery over the five measures described in Akodo's Leadership. Trained by the most experienced and decorated teachers in the Empire, officers from the War College were virtually guaranteed an honorable command and a career serving with distinction. [6]
